well....it's been a while. I'm in Key West , Florida. Had to motor down to recover dozens of paintings from a failed art gallery. I left Blue Hill, Maine on December 3rd. I managed to get out of town JUST as the snow started to fall. THE SNOW....i guess that's the theme for this winter. As i drove south through successive waves of snow...blowing into my old dodge van's windshield w/ the ferocity of a full can of disgourging silly string?.....i have questioned the logic of this trip! I HAD to retrieve paintings, if only to deprive others from possessing them by default. The Key West that they depict has effectively dissappeared, replaced by a dystopian present that unnervingly seems to attract more vistors/residents daily! it's The Snow, i guess. Aging Boomers and their subsidized largess can drive here...avoiding all the pitfalls that Gringos encounter out in the world ...beyond the Pale, so to speak. I'll try to keep up w/ Blogging on a daily basis...hope you'll comment. glc

happy new year!...the bullets are whizzing overhead(hopefully!) here in ole miami!...pop pop pop.....stay away from the windows!.....sushi just dropped in her shoe in key west...mayor bloomberg paid a whole lot of money to be on hand to press the button on the ball drop...meanwhile..jesus a round just landed outside my door here...i'm going to bed....work to do tomorrow! glc

dec.30th...full moon over miami....solstice,xmas and new years in rapid fashion....what will the new year bring?......i'm in miami for the winter...doing a series of portraits in oil/acrylic/watercolor of the locals and their haunts.....trying for a "beam reach" in tough economic times...always difficult...it seems that the $ has gone somewhere...exactly where is the question....into wars and welfare for bankers/traders population grows as resources are taxed to the limit.....and so it seems to progress through the years...i guess to appreciate a painting by rembrandt...you don't need to know much about his life/times....and so i try to keep the background noise to a minimum...focus on the craft that i've practiced for over 40 years and ....let the artistic cards fall where they may. peace glc

i turn 60 on april the 6th! Right now i'm wrapping up 3 months of painting/exhibiting/commissions in Key West, Florida. I"ll be in manhattan by the 18th of april...painting...showing some florida/nyc paintings on west. bway/prince st. in SOHO...should get home to blue hill, maine by month's end....feeling good...a little money saved up towards building my studio/gallery @ 20 Moose Lane in Blue Hill......hope to see you there....someday. peace, george

Key West Art Bar show last nite...

recovering today from the run-up to last nite's show of my recent paintings at the Key West Art Bar.....things went well and the show was well attended...well recieved. I'm a bit worn out from the workload.....i'll be continuing to paint in key west for a few more weeks...until the first week of April. My 6oth birthday falls on the 6th of April...quite a weight! Lost some old friends this year and i'm more cognizant than ever of the temporality of things...that's the conundrum....as a painter i make things and i guess my main motivation is to conjur some sort of visual alchemy..as a figurative artist, i create vignettes depicting scenes from a constantly changing world. Time passes...and in the passing i try to shine a light on memorable moments...that all too quickly drift into the past.

i have been very busy this season in key west. Wrapping up 30 new small paintings. They go on exhibit @ the Key West Art Bar on March 5th. A nostalgic nod to what what once were more common scenes of key west...folks gathered on porches of small eclectic homes...playing cards in the afternoon shade. Otherwise i have been doing "house portraits" on commission. Come this thursday, i inaugurate yet another relationship w/ a key west art gallery......over thirty two years i have shown my paintings w/ quite a few venues... i am excited about this new gallery, the Key West Art Bar and i anxious to show off my new work. I've about another month to go here in the keys.....a little r&r at the beach for a week, after the show and then i start focusing on new york city...i stop off and show my pix in SOHO enroute to Maine and my studio in BlueHill......where i AM BlueHillArtist.com

spring is right around the corner...folks in blue hill, maine are anxiously awaiting the return of artist/painter george lee crosby to his moose lane studio...not to worry, i'm still in key west, florida...working hard prepping two upcoming shows..the first) february22nd@The Gardens Hotel on Angela st.( it'll will run from 4-7pm in conjunction w/ Jazz Sunday) the second) inauguaral show @ The Key West Art Bar on march 1rst., the first thursday in March. Hang in there maineahrtist will be back in time to see his garden start to bloom!

thinking about the long consequential career of andrew wyeth. My route to painting in Maine came about with less ineluctable precision than that of wyeth. i sort of blundered into maine. in the midst of a hideously overheated july ...in manhattan, i came upon a book of photographs of Eliot Porter....mostly of his family home on great spruce island in the middle of penobscot bay. The light bulb over my head went off! "i gotta get outta this place"!...well, a decade or so later, i've found myself living in Blue Hill, Maine and working out of a studio on Moose Lane...with a beautiful view of penobscot bay....

i'm in key west...got here a week ago...spent new years w/ friends in miami..been on the road over a month..left maine on dec. 4th...it was just before the winter weather set in...good timing...headed for Hudson , ny where i had a small show of paintings @ LImner Gallery...spent two weeks in nyc painting and selling pix up until xmas...weather was rough..did well enough w/ sales....given the economic conditions...drive down I95 was hellasish as usual w/ cheap gas it took on the proportions of a Mad Max film....stayed in palm beach area for a while..pretty sterile...miami more to my liking...now in sunny key west for a couple of months...painting daily and taking commissions for house portraits....saving my money for studio i intend to build this spring, back in blue hill, maine.

figured it out when i left new york for Maine...i know there's heat/humidity down there...but! one drawback...more massachusset's license plates trolling around...high gas has reduced the noise where the rubber meets the road...a small price to pay.

hello, been absent for a while. Busy with my painting. I'm back in Maine the past two months...working hard w/ my construction/destruction projects...the squirrels are not pleased w/ all the activity. I've a show of paintings @ Esmond-Wright Gallery in Provincetown, Ma. on Sept. 5th. Apart from that I'm busy w/ private commissions and as i mentioned, building my studio here in Blue Hill , Maine.

well, it's been about a month since maineahrtist's last posting. General petraeus has left town...iran's president as well...i'm killing some time here in Blue Hill Library while i download some film forum podcasts. Planning a trip to Manhattan in two weeks...running low on the stuff that dreams are made of...ie: the weakening us dollar. (once i get my studio in the woods built, i'm headed to Italy to get me some of those increasingly more valuable Euros. Fall in Maine: the moon last night accented by the warmth in the air. quite nice. glc

i've been absent w/out leave from this spot for many weeks. apologies all around; i've had to make a buck, pay my debts and tend to my art biz. However, as i noodle away at my painting and deal w/ the masses here in ptown, i've been struck by the reluctance to state the obvious: the prez is naked! today's news illustrates the old saw about shooting the messenger .. (in this case, quite literally, as one of the soldiers from the 82nd airborne, subsequent to his disclosures, was shot in the head)..we...yes we you/me...WE are an army of occupation!Out of Iraq!...meanwhile sleazeball Las Vegas luminary Sheldon Adelson is funding Ari Fleisher's 11million dollar ad campaign to shore up (that's a laugh).. american opinion...Freedom's Watch my ass! OBSCENE!

having reluctantly left the exquisite warmth of late april in key west; i've returned to my cabin in Blue Hill, Maine. As we descended from 36,000 ft. to Bangor , Maine, the clouds enveloped and the cold rain surrounded. But, the lightly trafficked airport was a breeze to traverse and my friend Bruce was there on time to meet me for the drive to Blue Hill. Been here three days and i'm just able now to appreciate the contrasts between maine and the keys. I've timed my return well. The croci and daffodils are in bloom...the bald eagles are wheeling overhead and the sun has come out after a very wet april.I head for nyc, ny in two weeks....i plan to paint/ exhibit in SOHO (corner of w. broadway/prince) for the 2nd half of may...then head up to Provincetown, Ma., for the inaugural season of a friend's 80ft. wooden schooner. It's called the Hindu and last year at this time i was rainsoaked most days, working on the schooner's refitting down in Boothbay Harbor. I haven't seen the boat since it left it's boatyard and i'm looking forward to painting her in action. She's docked at the end of Macmillan wharf, next to the Widah museum. Then back to more street painting in nyc and a show of my paintings at DOMA cafe @ waverly/perry st.'s in the west village. plan to show paintings of coney island from twenty years ago.

i was born in new york city, 58 years ago. Watching a program on PBS last night, about chimpanzees....40 years of age is long in the tooth for our cousins...@ 58 i've got my health...and more importantly....an optimism that nevertheless, reflects the ironic paradoxes of longevity. The program on chimpanzees was sobering and at times quite inspirational....hope in knowledge and honesty....and the willingness to grow. As i awoke this am...i was struck by the irony of optimism...last night's uplifting and cautionary glimpse into the REALITY of our relationship w/ our near relations....when i returned to that pbs station, this am...."curious george" , a children's cartoon show....had the protagonist being outfitted w/ a mini protective beekeeper's suit?!!!!! the same forum for correcting our misguided behavior....was inculcating the same wrongheaded beliefs.....in children! and on it goes....

when i left blue hill maine on january 21st...the ride to the airport in bangor was a snowy blurrrrr....a few hours later i was in key west, florida. Been here since, painting and helping run an art gallery: The Real Key West. Seasons change and i'm already planning my return to Blue Hill at the end of April....I'm in the gallery (located @ 525 Caroline St. (next to the Curry Mansion and a block from the Bull) I've a lot of figurative paintings....scenes of key west, for the most part. Hope you'll stop by. george
